The biggest road block in Variable Rate Irrigation is soil moisture monitoring. The probes are costly, and several are needed to do a good job with scheduling irrigation. To date usually a single soil moisture probe per field is used, and this only provides a snapshot in time at a single location.
Developing VRI prescriptions isn’t easy. You need information, and the best information, of course, is real-time soil moisture information. But to get that very frequently at many locations within a field is challenging.

Skaha is field-testing a novel microwave sensor array that will address these challenges and provide growers, agronomists, and precision ag companies with soil moisture information of the root zone for entire fields with high resolution; delivered to a desktop or mobile device in real-time.
